Bournemouth have confirmed the signing of Rodrigo Riquelme on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.

The Spaniard had been attracting interest from fellow Championship side Reading, but it is the Cherries who have secured his signature.

Riquelme’s move to the Vitality Stadium is his first away from Atletico Madrid.

The Spaniard has spent the majority of his time at the Wanda Metropolitano developing in the reserve side. He made 21 appearances in the Segunda Division B for the Atletico reserve side, scoring five times.

However, he does have one appearance for the first-team, replacing Thomas Lemar in a defeat to Eibar.

A move to Bournemouth will give the 20-year-old vital experience in a first-team set-up. He becomes Jason Tindall’s first signing of the summer.

The 20-year-old was reportedly on the verge of joining the Cherries’ Championship rivals Reading. However, a late pursuit by Bournemouth convinced him to move to the South Coast.

What Was Said?

Speaking about his move to the official Bournemouth website, Riquelme said: “I am very happy to be here.

“Bournemouth is a very good club and this was the right move for me.

“I came here to improve myself and to help the team get back to the Premier League, which is where this club should be.

“I am excited to get started.”

Bournemouth boss Tindall added: “It is great to have a new signing on board and especially someone of Rodrigo’s quality.

“I have made it very clear that we will only sign players who can improve our squad and we have now done that.

“This football club has been synonymous with impactful wingers over the years, and Rodrigo fits that bill perfectly.

“He is a creative, exciting talent who I cannot wait to start working with.”

The Spaniard could feature for the Cherries this weekend against Coventry City.
