REPORT: Napoli Open Talks With Inter Milan Over Deal for Midfielder Matias Vecino

Matias Vecino

Napoli have opened talks with Inter Milan over a deal for midfielder Matias Vecino, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Uruguay international may be allowed to leave Inter following the signing of Arturo Vidal. Gennaro Gattuso is looking to strengthen his squad with Napoli aiming to return to the Champions League places this season.

According to Romano, personal terms are close to being agreed with talks progressing over the next few hours.

Vecino Would Become Napoli’s Second Summer Signing

Vecino has been with Inter Milan for the past three seasons, making 96 appearances. However, he only featured in just over half of Inter’s league games last season.

The arrival of Arturo Vidal has meant Antonio Conte may be open to letting the experienced Uruguayan depart. Vecino is vastly experienced in Serie A, having spent all of his career in Italy since leaving his home nation in 2013.

Vecino enjoyed a successful time at Fiorentina before joining Inter in 2017. He has also spent time at Cagliari and Empoli.

His most memorable moment for Inter was scoring the winner in their crunch league game with Lazio in May 2018. The winning goal meant Inter Milan made a much-needed return to the Champions League after six long years away from the competition.

A move to Napoli offers him a new challenge and regular game time. Vecino will compete with the likes of Fabian Ruiz, Stanislav Lobotka and Diego Demme for a place in the team. Vecino will fill the void left by Allan, who joined Everton earlier this summer.

Should Vecino arrive, he will become Napoli’s second summer signing after their club-record deal for Victor Osimhen. Vecino is a versatile midfielder who can operate anywhere in the central areas. He will certainly be an excellent addition for Napoli should they pursue a deal.
