REPORT: Cengiz Ünder to Join Leicester City on Loan With Obligation to Buy

Cengiz Under

Leicester City will sign AS Roma winger Cengiz Ünder on loan with an obligation to buy, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 23-year-old Turkish international is set to spend his first season in the Premier League after joining Roma in the summer of 2017. According to Romano, this deal is priced at €28 million.

Romano also confirmed that Francisco Trincão will be staying in Barcelona. Leicester had been linked to Trincão as a transfer target for the summer window. However, it appears he will not be making a move away from Barcelona during this transfer window.

More Than a Loan

It appears Ünder’s time at Leicester will be more than just one season. The obligation to buy clause could see him begin a longer stint in the Premier League.

His career in Serie A did not yield a breakthrough season where he produced eye-catching statistics. However, his time in England could be different. At Leicester, he will likely get the playing time he needs to be an effective winger. This opportunity with Leicester could result in one of his best seasons to date.

If Brendan Rodgers sticks with the 4-1-4-1 formation for the duration of the season, then Ünder might be able to be a regular selection in the starting XI. He could slot in at the right midfielder role where Ayoze Perez started against West Bromwich Albion in their first game of the season last Sunday. Perez and Ünder could embark on a positional battle for the right midfield spot in the starting XI.

Depth for Europa League

Leicester will be playing in the Europe League this season, which means there will plenty of more matches on the schedule. As a result, the club will need to have all hands on deck for the 2020/21 campaign. Ünder enters the picture at a perfect time as he will provide much-needed depth.

He has played on the right and left midfield roles in his career, and in the Europa League, he can offer Rodgers different options for these fixtures. It’s going to be a long season for Leicester and Ünder can help ensure there is creativity on the wings. Whether that’s in the starting XI or as a substitute, he’s a good player to have as an option.
