Borussia Dortmund: Three Key Players for the 2020/21 Season

Borussia Dortmund will look to contest for the Bundesliga title in the 2021/21 season. After finishing runners-up in the last campaign, the German club will turn to new signings and veterans alike to deliver results. Here are three key players for Dortmund in the upcoming season.

Borussia Dortmund: Three Key Players for the 2020/21 Season

Marco Reus

Dortmund’s captain returns fit for the start of the season. Reus did not play a part in the finish to the 2019/20 season as he was sidelined with an injury. Despite missing the latter stages of the campaign, he was still able to be impactful in the fixtures he appeared in.

Reus will be one of the few veteran players on the Dortmund squad. As a result, he will serve as a source of leadership for the club. The Dortmund attacking unit is full of very young players who are still developing and adjusting to top-flight football in Europe. If he can stay healthy, Reus will be able to assist in leading the club to a stellar campaign that could result in a surprise Bundesliga title.

Thomas Meunier

The former Paris Saint-Germain player joined Dortmund on a free transfer and was a major acquisition for the club ahead of this season. Meunier is a talented right-back who should help make the Dortmund backline even stronger. With longtime right-back Lukasz Piszczek retiring at the end of the season, the transition to Meunier being the main option at the position will begin this season.

Right-back is not the only position Meunier could feature at. The 29-year-old may find himself in the midfield occupying the right midfielder role. The signing of Meunier could prove to be a key acquisition as he adds experience and depth. He is joining Dortmund from one of Europe’s top clubs and has plenty of experience in big matches.

Erling Braut Haaland

Haaland was an impactful player right from the start for Dortmund. The rising Norwegian star scored 13 goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances to help lead the way to a second-place finish and a place in the UEFA Champions League. He appears ready to put up big numbers again in the coming season. After a terrific pre-season, Haaland is poised to challenge Robert Lewandowski for the Golden Boot.

Good results typically come when Haaland scores for Dortmund. The club won every Bundesliga match the 20-year-old scored in. There’s no question the majority of Dortmund’s goals will come from Haaland this season in the Champions League and Bundesliga. If he can replicate his form from last season then Dortmund are going to win lots of matches.
