Chelsea are continuing to be busy in the transfer market. The Blues have confirmed the arrival of French defender Malang Sarr, who has signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

A Deal They Couldn’t Turn Down

Speaking about his arrival to the official Chelsea website, director Marina Granovskaia said: “The opportunity to sign Malang was one we could not miss. He is a tremendous prospect and we will be monitoring him closely during his loan period, hoping he will soon be back at Chelsea. We are very happy to welcome him to the club today.”

However, Sarr will not link up with the Chelsea squad this season. Instead, he will head out on loan to continue his development and continue to earn valuable experience.

The ball-playing central defender joins the Blues from Ligue 1 side Nice. During his time with the club, he made 119 appearances, scoring three goals.

The 21-year-old has already become accustomed to life as a first-team central defender, having made his debut for his boyhood club as a 17-year-old. Despite his young age, he made 32 appearances in all competitions during his debut season.

Building for the Future

Sarr’s arrival represents a sign that Chelsea are continuing to build for the future.

Last season saw manager Frank Lampard use several academy products in his line-up due to their transfer embargo. While they are no longer restricted by that embargo, the Chelsea boss still has a clear structure in place.

However, the Blues are clearly managing Sarr’s career. They could easily throw him into the first-team picture in the hope that he impresses. Instead, they have opted to loan him out, allowing him to be eased into the pressurising environment of Champions League football.

Furthermore, there will also be a deeper focus on their defence this season. It is an area where they struggled greatly last season, meaning Sarr would be under pressure to put things right.
