Big Future

Dean Henderson has spent the past two seasons out on loan at Sheffield United, where he made a lasting impression.

The 23-year-old has a big future ahead of him and the only question that remained was whether that would be at Manchester United or not.

He has answered that question, signing a new long-term contract with the club.

Invaluable Sheffield United Loan Spell

“The pathway that I have been on for the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable loan period at Sheffield United has been part of that,” Henderson told the Manchester United website.

“The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group.

“The faith that the manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

“I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club.

“Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead.”

Using the Loan System to His Advantage

Henderson has used the loan system at Old Trafford to his credit, having spent time at Stockport County, Grimsby Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Sheffield United.

He has returned to United a much better goalkeeper after every spell and has regularly shown admirable traits throughout his time out on loan.

Often at Sheffield United, responding to having made an error in previous games with a string of brilliant performances, for example.

He is still yet to feature on the pitch for the England national team, however, that will come sooner rather than later.

Henderson played 86 games throughout his time at Bramall Lane, keeping 35 clean sheets and conceding 78 goals.

He has experience throughout the Football League, and crucially the top-flight last season.

Strong Goalkeeping Department

“We are delighted that Dean has signed his new contract,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told the club website. “He had another great season at Sheffield United, where he gained a lot of experience and grew both as a player and a person.

“Dean is a fantastic young keeper with the attitude and work-rate to keep improving every day.

“We are in a strong position within the goalkeeping department and that gives us the competition for places that we are looking for in the squad. Dean is another great example of the type of player who has come through the academy and truly understands what it means to be a Manchester United player.

“We are all looking forward to working with Dean and continuing to develop his talent.”

New Level of Commitment

Henderson may now go head-to-head with current United number one, David De Gea, after the Spanish keeper made a series of errors in recent months.

Signing a contract of up-to six-years is a new level of commitment to United from Dean Henderson, who usually extends for around two-to-three years. The goalkeeper clearly believes Manchester United is the place for him to showcase his talent for years to come.
