Barcelona have confirmed that new signing Miralem Pjanić has tested positive for COVID-19. He will now travel to Barcelona in 15 days time and will then be introduced as a Barcelona player.

The Bosnian midfielder was due to meet up with his new teammates shortly to start pre-season training. However, this will now be pushed back two weeks as he self isolates in his home.

Barcelona Confirm News of Positive Miralem Pjanić COVID-19 Test

Club Statement

A statement by the club read: “Miralem Pjanić has tested positive for PCR on Saturday 22 August after feeling a little unwell. The player is in good health and is self-isolating at home.

“The player will therefore not be travelling to Barcelona for 15 days, when he will be expected to report for duty with the FC Barcelona team.”

Pjanić Releases His Own Statement

After the announcement that he had contracted the virus, Pjanić released his own statement on Twitter.

This read: “I want to reassure everyone who cares about me, I’m fine and luckily I’m asymptomatic.

“What they teach us these days is that we can’t take anything for granted. We are calm and respect the rules. See you soon.”

Start Date Pushed Back

With Pjanić now in self isolation, he will not be able to join up for pre-season training for 15 days from the time of being confirmed as positive.

This means he is expected to train for the first time on September 7th. This is just five days before the La Liga season is expected to get underway.

However, due to their appearance in the Champions League mini tournament, Barca will not start their new season until the third week of the season.

This will give Pjanić enough time to get integrated in the squad before Barcelona start their new season under Ronald Koeman.
