Robert Lewandowski Closing in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League Record

Robert Lewandowski

Bayern Munich’s star striker Robert Lewandowksi produced a terrific performance against Chelsea. The ever-reliant goalscorer was involved in every single goal Bayern recorded against Chelsea over the course of the two Round of 16 fixtures.

Robert Lewandowski Nearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League Record

Running Away with the Golden Boot

The top goalscorer race in the Champions League is all but over. Lewandowski will enter the quarterfinals with 13 goals which is three ahead of second-place Erling Braut Haaland, whose club was eliminated from the competition. There are a host of players at six goals scored, but it’s very unlikely any will catch Lewandowski, especially with the remaining rounds being only one leg.

All-time, Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals scored during the 2013/14 Champions League season may be in danger. If Bayern Munich can continue to progress in the tournament, Lewandowski will be presented with the opportunity to break the record of the most goals scored over the course of a single Champions League season.

As Lewandowski’s remarkable career continues, the 2019/20 season may turn out to be the most memorable of his career. A chance to lift the Champions League trophy and take a record is at hand. If he can complete both tasks then there’s no question he was the best player of the 2019-20 season in the world.

A Dominant Performance

Lewandowski has been extremely impactful for Bayern Munich since he arrived from Borussia Dortmund. This most recent performance against Chelsea is just one of the many spectacular moments he’s produced for the German champions.

He recorded three goals and four assists in the two matches against Chelsea as Bayern won 7-1 on aggregate. There’s no question he played a huge role in the domination they showed against Chelsea.

Assists do not typically come as easily for Lewandowski as he is almost always the target man. He only finished with four assists during the Bundesliga season which paled in comparison to his 34 goals. As a result, this is one of the reasons his performance against Chelsea stands out from the others.
