New Number One?

The arrival of Andreas Luthe will be a welcome addition for Union Berlin. The 33-year-old looks likely to be Urs Fischer’s number one goalkeeper after Rafal Gikiewicz left in the summer.

Gikiewicz played all but one game last season, while Moritz Nicolas debutised in a 4-0 defeat at TSG Hoffenheim in the penultimate game of the campaign. Jakob Busk and Lennart Moser are also at the club, but neither featured for Die Eisernen last season.

Career So Far

Luthe began his career with SuS Niederbonsfeld and later joined Borussia Velbert. In 2001, he signed for VfL Bochum and turned out 75 times for the reserve team before making his breakthrough in the first team.

He made 169 appearances for Die Unabsteigbaren before joining Augsburg in 2016. Despite being a number two with the Bundesliga club, he still made 31 appearances, keeping seven clean sheets.

What Was Said

Speaking to the clubs’ official website, Luthe said: “Union are a club that I have known about for a long time and I have followed their positive development closely over the last few years.

“After good discussions with the club’s management, it was soon clear to me that I would like to move to Berlin.

“I’m looking forward to the new city, the new job and the new club. Next season I would like to contribute to a successful Bundesliga season at 1.FC Union Berlin.”

Oliver Ruhnert, Director for Professional Football at 1. FC Union Berlin, added: “With Andreas Luthe, we have successfully signed an excellent goalkeeper who knows the league well, has vast experience in first-team football and has proven quality in the Bundesliga — particularly last season.

“His character and presence will help us to achieve our targets in the next season in our second Bundesliga campaign. We’re delighted that Andreas has picked Union.”

Summer Signings Continue

Luthe is Unions sixth summer signing. Defenders Nico Schlotterbeck and Niko Giesselmann, and midfielders Sebastian Griesbeck and Keita Endo have all joined the club during the window. The club also snapped up striker Cedric Teuchert who arrived from FC Schalke 04.
