REPORT: Reading Midfielder John Swift Closing in on Sheffield United Move

Reading midfielder John Swift is reportedly on the verge of completing his move to Premier League high-flyers Sheffield United, according to Berkshire Live’s Jonathan Low.

The 25-year-old, who has appeared 34 times for Reading this season, is said to be close to finalising the move, worth an initial fee of £3.5 million.

Swift, who has represented England U21 on 13 occasions, had been a target for newly-promoted Leeds United, however, it is now believed Chris Wilder has his man. The former Chelsea youth player, who made one first-team appearance at Stamford Bridge, coming on as a replacement for Eden Hazard, could now be playing European football next season.

Sheffield United have performed above all expectations this season. They currently sit eighth ahead of their final two games, and a strong finish could see the Blades secure Europa League qualification.

Swift, who has captained the Royals of late, now looks set to make his landmark 150th and final appearance for Reading on Wednesday in the club’s final game of the Championship season against Swansea City.

Reading are in desperate need to balance the books after years of spending beyond their means in search of a Premier League return of their own. Swift could be one of many key assets leaving the Madejski Stadium this summer.

Chris Wilder has already begun strengthening his squad ahead of next term. Swift will follow the arrival of former Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, who was confirmed at Brammall Lane late last week.

One Departure at the Club

Meanwhile, Reading have confirmed that winger Mo Barrow has left the club to complete a permanent move to South Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

The Gambia international leaves for an undisclosed fee having originally joined the club from Swansea in 2017. He scored 14 goals in 82 appearances for the Royals.
