Baldwin Becomes Rovers’ Second Summer Signing

Bristol Rovers announced via their website they had signed the versatile Jack Baldwin. Baldwin arrives on a free transfer and has signed a two-year deal at the Memorial Stadium.

Baldwin is the Gas’ second signing following the arrival of Josh Grant on Saturday. The 27-year-old is vastly experienced at League One level and will add some much-needed steel to a leaky Rovers defence.

Baldwin began his career at Hartlepool United before making the move to Peterborough United. He was a fan favourite during his five years at London Road, clocking up over 100 appearances.

He joined Sunderland in 2018 following their relegation from the Championship. The defender struggled to make an impact at the Stadium of Light during his two years there. His lack of game time at Sunderland saw him spend last season on loan in League Two with Salford City.

Injuries have halted his progress over the last two seasons but a move to Bristol Rovers offers a fresh start. He joins with Rovers hoping to sustain a promotion charge after last season’s collapse.

Baldwin Delighted to Sign

Speaking to the Rovers website about his move, Baldwin said: “I’m delighted to be here!

“Speaking with Ben early on this summer, I’m thrilled that we have managed to get everything sorted so early on, with the current climate.

“I had chats with Ben quite a few times before signing and he’s a positive person. He knows the type of football that he wants his team to play and that style matches the way that I see myself playing.

“There’s a lot of positivity around Bristol Rovers, so that makes it a great time to be joining and I’m excited to get started.”

Manager Garner added: “We are delighted to have Jack on board with us.

“Jack has very good experience in League 1 but also retains the ambition to play at a higher level. He is a committed and intelligent defender who is also very good in possession.

“ I like his character and he has good leadership qualities, having captained former teams at this level. I think Jack joins us with a point to prove and a real hunger to do well in this next phase of his career.

“From my perspective, he just needs to play his natural game and work hard to improve every day as he has all the attributes to be an excellent addition for us.”
