Douglas Luiz

Manchester City Pep Guardiola is considering a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz just a year after the Brazilian moved to the West Midlands, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Luiz signed for Villa for around £15 million after failing to earn a work permit in Manchester last summer.

While City inserted a buy-back clause into the transfer, it will reportedly cost them up to double the amount they initially received for the player, with the price set at £25 million this summer and £30 million from next season.

Pep Guardiola said in November 2019: “He would be here if a work permit were possible… but now he is at Aston Villa. We have an option to get him back but sometimes life is like this. I think he had the quality to play with us but he could not do it.

“The talent is always there, we’ll see at the end of the season what his level is but the quality is always there.”

Douglas Luiz Makes an Impression

The Brazilian has become a key player for Aston Villa this season, making 33 appearances in the Premier League and featuring in all but six minutes of play since the restart.

Manager Dean Smith spoke highly of the midfielder in June, saying: “Douglas has been unbelievable since we’ve come back. He walked through the door without much of a pre-season. He’s now got a really good understanding of his teammates.”

He attributes the growth of Luiz to his commitment to learning English.

“He’s gotten better and passed his English exam,” he said. ” He needed to know the type of passes players want to receive from him, where they want him to be on the pitch. He needed to know them more. The language has helped.”
