Oldham Athletic’s young sensation Zak Dearnley has signed a new two-year deal with the club, seeing him through to the summer of 2022.

A Brilliant Return

Dearnley started his career with Manchester United and had a loan spell with Oldham in the second half of the 2018/19 season. He was released by the Red Devils at the end of that campaign and, after failing to find a new club higher up the ladder, he joined North West Counties Football League Division One South side New Mills.

However, after playing just one game for his new team, he re-joined Oldham in the January 2020 transfer window.

Since then, he has not looked back and has scored four goals in eight appearances. Two of those strikes came within three minutes of each other in the 2-2 draw against Leyton Orient in February.

His displays earned him a nomination for the PFA Fans Player of the Month award for February.

What Was Said?

Speaking to the club website about his new deal, Dearnley said: “I know it’s been tough for everyone over the past few months and there’s more important things than football, so I hope everyone is staying safe and well.

“It’s nice to get my future sorted though and I’m just ready to get back playing when we’re allowed to do so and making sure I continue to show everyone what I can do in front of goal.”

Head coach Dino Maamria added: “I’m delighted to have Zak agree to a new two-year contract, his profile fits in perfectly with the future team we are trying to build.

“He’s still young, ambitious and a determined character with plenty of technical qualities that Oldham supporters can relate with. He’s also an important piece of the jigsaw in rebuilding a new team.”
