Gabriel Martinelli Could Miss Rest of Season for Arsenal

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli could be out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in training, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports. Gunners fans had been calling for the 19-year-old to feature after a lacklustre restart to the Premier League campaign. However, unless something drastic changes in the form of those currently starting, Arsenal’s attack is set to remain as blunt as it has been in the opening two games.

Gabriel Martinelli May Miss Rest of Season

What Happened?

The 19-year-old suffered the problem in training on Monday. He is said to have completed the session but felt discomfort afterwards. He underwent a scan on Tuesday and the club are now waiting for the results from a knee specialist. However, if early indications are true, he is set to be on the sidelines for the rest of the campaign.

That would make it four injuries since the Premier League restarted. Both Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari were taken off in the opener against Manchester City. Goalkeeper Bern Leno was then stretchered off against Brighton & Hove Albion after clashing with Seagulls forward Neal Maupay.

A Blow for the Gunners

Martinelli has been one of the unexpected stars of this season. The young Brazillian has scored ten goals in 26 appearances for the club. His first two goals came in the 5-0 win against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup and he scored another brace in the Europa League win against Standard Liege.

Martinelli also played his part in the astonishing 5-5 draw against Liverpool in the EFL Cup, scoring twice in the game and also netting from the spot in the penalty shoot-out.

It means that certainly for Arsenal’s next games, visits to Southampton in the league and Sheffield United in the FA Cup, they will have one less option on the bench.
