A goal in each half secured a vital three points for Cardiff City against league leaders Leeds United.

Cardiff Claim the Victory

After a tight opening twenty minutes, Leeds began to find some rhythm as they looked to open the scoring. However, after an uncharacteristic error from Kalvin Phillips, Junior Hoillett took the ball to the edge of the box and fired home for the Bluebirds. Leeds continued to press and were denied under strange circumstances when Jack Harrison’s goal-bound effort hit teammate Patrick Bamford to keep the score at 1-0.

Leeds applied more pressure second half and could have been level, however, Alex Smithies made a point-blank save from a Tyler Roberts effort. Despite the pressure, it was Cardiff who got the second goal. Substitute Robert Glatzel scored a wonderful volleyed effort from the edge of the box to make it 2-0. Leeds continued to ask questions but found it difficult to break down a resilient Cardiff. Despite the Leeds efforts, Cardiff were able to hold on for victory after scoring both of their only shots on target.

The Impact Going Forward

Defeat means Leeds missed a glorious chance to go ten points clear of third-placed Fulham, who they play next weekend. Today’s result, however, would have been more devastating were it not for West Bromwich Albion and Fulham both dropping points at the weekend.

The huge three points for Cardiff means they move up to seventh, and sit just outside the playoff positions on goal difference.

Leeds will need to bounce back for their huge game against Fulham, as a win for Fulham would bring them within four points of the top two. Cardiff will be hoping to build on their result, as they play sixth-placed Preston who hold the last playoff spot ahead of the Bluebirds on goal difference.
