Jean-Philippe Mateta Secures Stunning Win For Mainz At Borussia Dortmund

Mainz Take A Huge Step Towards Safety

Bundesliga strugglers Mainz secured a shock away at Borussia Dortmund. Goals from Jonathan Burkardt and Jean-Philippe Mateta secured Mainz a priceless victory.

It was a hugely disappointing night for Dortmund who looked flat after seeing their title chances disappear last night. A lacklustre display will no doubt heap the pressure on Lucien Favre.

Mainz opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark courtesy of Burkardt. The midfielder leapt above everyone else to meet Ridle Baku’s teasing cross. Mainz grew in confidence and forced a string of excellent saves from Roman Burki.

Their persistence was rewarded just four minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty. The penalty came after Lukasz Piszczek fouled Danny Latza in the area. Mateta stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty past Burki.

Dortmund tried to respond but their efforts were in vain as Mainz held out for a terrific win. The result sees Mainz remain 15th but significantly, they pull five points clear of the relegation zone with two games to go.

Dortmund stay second but are now just three points clear of RB Leipzig in third.

Fortuna Dusseldorf Produce Stunning Comeback At RB Leipzig

Fortuna Dusseldorf produced an excellent comeback to take a point from RB Leipzig. The visitors were two down but late goals from Steven Skrzybski and Andre Hoffmann earn Dusseldorf a sensational point.

RB Leipzig raced into a goal two lead early in the second half with two goals in the space of three minutes. Kevin Kampl opened the scoring with an excellent strike from outside the box. Timo Werner soon made it 2-0 with a thunderous finish after latching onto Marcel Halstenburg’s cross.

Dusseldorf rallied and pull one back with three minutes of the 90 to play courtesy Skrzybski. The Schalke loanee slotted past Peter Gulasci to give Dusseldorf hope. Their efforts were rewarded in stoppage time when Andre Hoffmann planted a header into the net after meeting Mathias Jorgensen’s flick-on.

The result sees Dusseldorf stay in the relegation play-off place, but they pull a point clear of Werder Bremen ahead of their crucial trip to Köln.

RB Leipzig stay third with second still up for grabs for Die Rotenbull. They face second-placed Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
