Union Berlin Remain Winless Since Bundesliga Return

1. FC Union Berlin remain winless since the return of the Bundesliga as Urs Fischer’s side played out a 1-1 draw at home to FC Schalke 04.

It was, however, the second point Die Eisernen have picked up since the return, but the top-flight debutants are now just four points clear of the relegation playoff spot.

Draw Against Schalke

Many Union fans may have taken the point before the game against a struggling Schalke side but, not for the first team this season, the performance deserved all three.

Robert Andrich gave Die Eisernen the lead after just 11 minutes – his first in the Bundesliga from his 48th shot on goal – but on-loan Everton full-back Jonjoe Kenny levelled midway through the half with a sweet 25-yard effort.

After the opener, Union were on top and could have taken the lead moments later. But the goal from the away side came against the run of play before and slowed the momentum as half time closed in.

The second half saw both sides having a go, with Union creating the better chances but ultimately failing to find another goal. If either side deserved all three points, it would have been the hosts, but their failure to concert chances once again was an issue.

Both Teams out of Form

For Union, they are winless in five since the restart of the Bundesliga and now find themselves without maximum points for nine games in succession.

As for Schalke, they have equalled a club record of 12 games without a win, which was set during the 1993/94 season. Today’s goal was also just the fourth the club have scored since 25 January.

Union have moved up one place to 13th following their draw, and are now four points clear of the relegation playoff. Their next opponents are 1. FC Köln.
