What Can Timo Werner Offer as a Chelsea Player?

With Chelsea in talks with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, we assess the potential impact the striker could have.

It’s undoubtedly a huge statement from Chelsea. Werner has been one of the best strikers in Europe this season.

What Can Timo Werner Offer as a Chelsea Player?

Goals

Werner has scored an impressive 31 goals in 40 games this season, with 25 coming in the Bundesliga. That is the second-highest tally in the league, behind that of Robert Lewandowski.

In total Werner has scored 92 goals in 154 games for Leipzig, which will be promising stats for Frank Lampard.

One of the German internationals strongest attributes is his pace. His ability to get in behind back fours will most likely make him a handful for Premier League defences.

Positioning

Another major strength of Werner is his positioning. Under Julien Nagelsmann’s regime, the German has become more of a dynamic player and, at times, more of a number ten.

Timo Werner, who used to sit on the last line of defence, has begun to move into a deeper position, between the back four, and the midfield. He also tends to drift out to the flanks.

This freedom of movement has really got the best of Werner. Moving out to the flanks has allowed him to use his place and play himself in on goal.

It has also allowed Werner to create opportunities for his teammates. By dragging opposition over, it enables to him create space for teammates, and play them in for goalscoring chances. This could be reinforced by his seven assists made this season.

Timo Werner Alongside Plenty of Attacking Options

One of the biggest factors to Werner’s goalscoring heroics has been aided by the link-up play between Werner and his teammates. Most specifically, assist king Christopher Nkunku, who has bagged 15 assists this season.

At Chelsea, Werner has an array of attacking options. This includes the likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Christian Pulisic, and Hachim Ziyech, who joins from Ajax this Summer.

However, with manager Lampard favouring a one striker formation, he will be facing competition upfront.

In particular Tammy Abraham, who after spending the majority of his career scoring in The Championship, has done reasonably well in his first proper season with the Blues.

Abraham has scored 13 goals in the Premier League this season, with 15 in all competitions. With the Premier League expected to return in 12 days time, Abraham will be hoping to prove to boss Lampard, he can be the number one striker.

But overall Timo Werner will be key for Chelsea next season and could be part of a promising future at Stamford Bridge.
