Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff is set to join Serie A side Udinese this summer, according to Lee Ryder of the Newcastle Chronicle.

Five-Year Contract

The youngster is set to sign a five-year contract with the Italian club, who are currently 14th in the Serie A table.

According to Sky Sports, Udinese will have to pay compensation for the 20-year-old. However, this is only set to be around £400,000.

The youngster held talks with Udinese in Italy before the Coronavirus lockdown. As a result, a move could be concluded swiftly following the end of the season.

Furthermore, a move to the Italian club is also set to see his salary jump to £30,000 a week.

Breakthrough Season

Longstaff has become highly thought of at St James’ Park after enjoying a breakthrough season in the first-team.

He has made 12 appearances so far under Steve Bruce, scoring three times. The 20-year-old made quite the impression on his debut, registering from long-range to help beat Manchester United 1-0.

As a result, Newcastle have been keen to see him remain in the north east. The Magpies had offered him a new contract earlier in the season, however, this was turned down.

Has the Proposed Takeover Complicated His Future?

Newcastle United’s proposed takeover may have thrown doubt over Longstaff’s future at the club.

A deal for the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia to purchase an 80% stake in the Magpies is close. This proposed takeover has seen Newcastle linked to a number of high-profile players, as they look to make a name for themselves at the top of the table.

As a result, Matty Longstaff may feel that he will not get the development he needs to earn regular first-team opportunities. He may see a move abroad as his best opportunity to achieve that.
