Carlisle United Become First EFL Team to Issue Released and Retained List

Carlisle United

On the same day it was announced that clubs had voted to end the League Two season early, Carlisle United have become the first team in the EFL to issue their released and retained list ahead of the summer.

Players in the EFL’s three divisions, in particular, have faced uncertainty due to the season’s suspension, with many of their contracts due to expire this summer. That is now confirmed to be the case for ten Carlisle players.

Carlisle United Issue Released and Retained List

Released

Among those to be released is goalkeeper Adam Collin, who returned to the club in 2018 having previously spent four years with them between 2009-2013.

Kelvin Ethuhu, Louis Gray and Jack Iredale have also not been offered new deals, while the same goes for Mike Jones, Keighran Kerr, Nathaniel Knight-Percival, Harry McKirdy, Mo Sagaf and former Sheffield United winger Stefan Scougall.

Offered New Deals

Forward Lewis Alessandra, who arrived from Morecambe in January, has been offered a new deal, while out-of-contract players Jack Bridge, Gethin Jones and Byron Webster are all set to be offered new contracts in due course.

Under Contract

The club have exercised their option in the contract of Jon Mellish, meaning he is set for another season at Brunton Park. Also remaining in Cumbria are Nick Anderton, Callum Guy, Aaron Hayden, Max Hunt and Omari Patrick.

Development players who have new or existing contracts for next season include Jamie Armstrong, Charlie Barnes, Charlie Birch, Taylor Charters, Josh Dixon, Liam Lightfoot and Tom Wilson.

What Was Said?

Chief executive Nigel Clibbens told the club website: “The normal end-of-season process for contracts has been thrown into confusion, which is unsettling for players and difficult for clubs and coaches. Discussions have taken place between the PFA and the EFL about extending the deadline for notifying players to late June to try help deal with this, but so much remains unclear.

“We are releasing our information now, even though every player remains furloughed – but under contract – until 30 June.”

“We considered waiting, but held early discussions with the players and quickly decided it was right to give the playing squad clarity about their future at the club at the earliest possible opportunity.”
