Will Angel Gomes Leave Manchester United This Summer?

Angel Gomes Manchester United

At the beginning of the season, Manchester United had two young prospects with senior contracts running out at its conclusion. Fast forward a few months, and while one, Tahith Chong, eventually signed a new deal, Angel Gomes is yet to agree upon one. The Englishman has been incredibly impressive through all age levels in Manchester, and made his first-team debut at the age of 16 in 2017. With so much promise, it would be a shame to let him go at the end of the season, but fans are still uncertain as to whether Angel Gomes will leave Manchester United this summer.

Lack of Game Time

One aspect of Gomes’ time at United which he may look to escape is the lack of game-time. Despite having debuted almost three years ago, the Englishman has only made ten appearances for the Red Devils’ senior side. Furthermore, he has seen those with whom he went through the ranks, the likes of Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams, emerge as first-team regulars and even less frequent first-team players, such as Chong, have surpassed him in senior United appearances.

Although the Manchester Evening News recently reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not playing the 19-year-old due to his contract situation, the young prospect will be looking for not only a large raise in his new contract, but also the promise of more game-time.

Attractive Offers for Gomes to Leave Old Trafford

Due to the uncertainty that has surrounded the 19-year-old since the beginning of the season, many clubs have started to display an interest in him. Chelsea and Barcelona both seem frontrunners in the race, and both have intriguing offers for him.

While his wage demands are high, the prospect of playing for Barcelona may be more appealing than that of Manchester. Not only does the style of La Liga seem to suit him better, but the Spanish Giants are also a team with many legendary players, Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez to name a few, and extremely talented prospects like Frenkie de Jong and Ousmane Dembélé.

Chelsea also have many youngsters who look to have bright futures ahead of them, and while they do not hold the same prowess as Barcelona, they may seem a better alternative to United bearing in mind Gomes’ lack of first-team appearances.

United in His Blood

With Angel Gomes having joined the Manchester United academy at the age of six, the team runs through his blood. United has been ingrained in his life for the majority of its duration, and to leave the Manchester side would be difficult on multiple levels. Furthermore, with former star at Old Trafford Luis Nani is his godfather, the Red Devils are present in his personal life too.

Gomes insists that his plan is to stay at United and win trophies, but only time will tell as to whether the youngster pens a new deal in Manchester or searches for a different challenge elsewhere.
