Liverpool had a very quiet summer transfer window prior to the new season, but the Reds made an attempt to sign Norwegian playmaker Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid.

Odegaard Eventually Joined Real Sociedad

According to a report in the Metro, Liverpool failed with an attempt to sign Real Madrid playmaker Martin Odegaard. This is according to Odegaard’s former manager Leonid Slutsky who worked with the midfielder at Vitesse Arnhem last season.

Real Madrid did eventually let the 21-year-old leave with league rivals Real Sociedad taking him on a season-long loan. This is Odegaard’s third loan spell away from Real Madrid since arriving at the age of 17.

Speaking about Odegaard, Slutsky said: “His time at Vitesse has been very important. He became one of the best players in the Eredivisie and had many offers in his pocket. Not only from Real Sociedad but also from Liverpool and Ajax.

“It was a big challenge for me to kind of resurrect his career. ‘Martin, his agent and I reach an agreement quickly. He had to take a step forward because Vitesse were a stronger team than Heerenveen (his previous loan club).

“It’s clear that Real Madrid will decide his future with him by the end of the season. Could he stay with Real Sociedad for another year? I don’t know. I’m sure that Odegaard is ready to play for Real Madrid now.

“When I saw him play for Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu I realised that he definitely has the quality to play for Real Madrid.”

Could Liverpool Re-Visit This Summer?

Odegaard is currently enjoying his best season in terms of goals, assists and game time with the Norwegian thriving at Real Sociedad. So much so Real Madrid are expected to utilise him in the first team next season.

However, could Liverpool rekindle their interest in the playmaker with the midfielder struggling to settle at Madrid? Something Liverpool may look at in the summer but with a vast array options available to Klopp, it’s unlikely he will look at adding another midfielder.
