REPORT: Willian Free Transfer on the Cards

Willian free

A well-known fact about football is that players become less valuable and more injury-prone as they get older. This is why clubs are hesitant to hand out long-term contracts to older players. If the player gets injured, the club will be left paying a high wage for nothing. According to reports from Fabio Riva of Tuttosport, this is exactly what is going on during talks between Willian and Chelsea of a new contract.

Juventus Could Grab Willian, a Chelsea Veteran, for Free

A Complicated Contract Situation

The Brazilian’s contract expires in the summer and the two sides cannot agree on terms. Willian wants security, so he is not willing to sign a short term contract. He is firm in that he needs at least a three-year deal. On the other hand, the Premier League side have stalled because they know they could lose valuable money by agreeing on a longer contract.

This is the perfect opportunity for another club to swoop in and meet the Chelsea veteran’s terms. It seems Juventus are willing to do just that. He turns 32 in the summer, so it would pose a risk, but with no transfer fee this risk seems worth it. Buying Willian from the free transfer market almost sounds too good to be true.

Willian has commented on his transfer dilemma. The Chelsea veteran told Diego Lima of ESPN Brazil, “My desire is to stay in the Premier League, but I don’t rule out playing in other leagues. I’m going to play until the end of the season and see what happens.”

While many other top clubs are eyeing the winger, a move to Juventus seems highly likely. The Serie A giants are the ultimate masters of buying players in the free transfer market for a bargain. Some of their best deals have been Paul Pogba, Dani Alves and Andrea Pirlo. Could Willian join this list of elites at the Old Lady?
