An unnamed player for Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion has tested positive for Coronavirus, according to Simon Stone of BBC Sport. Three Seagulls players were showing symptoms of the virus, with one of the tests returning positive.

Player is ‘OK’

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber was not willing to reveal who the player was, the same action League Two club Leyton Orient took when two of their players tested positive.

However, Barber did say that the player is “getting the care he needs” and testing was only done “when symptoms emerged”.

Brighton are currently on a break from full-time training and players are reduced to doing home workouts due to the pandemic, which has led to all professional football being suspended and non-league football from Step 3 downwards being declared null and void.

The Seagulls are 15th in the table, two points above the relegation zone with nine games left to decide their fate – although the fate of the remainder of the season is yet to be confirmed.

Club Using a Psychologist

Due to the current lockdown in effect on the UK, players are, like every else, stuck inside their home. This can have a mental effect, and Brighton manager Graham Potter has confirmed that the club are using a psychologist for those that are struggling.

This is mainly due to the club not allowing players to return to their home countries, instead keeping them in the UK.

Potter said: “Some of the players are away from their families and they are missing them. Even if they went home, they couldn’t really go and visit them because everyone is on lockdown but we need to be aware of that. We have a psychologist working at the club to give extra support.

“Isolation is not something that is easy for human beings to do but we are in this position and we have to look after each other.”
