How Likely is David de Gea to Leave Manchester United?

David de Gea has been a staple of Manchester United’s squad ever since he joined in 2011. He has been a loyal servant of the club throughout his stay and has always been a consistent, star player.

However, the Premier League side are going through a rebuilding process and it might be time for the Spaniard to leave Old Trafford. There is already a solid replacement for de Gea in Dean Henderson, who is on loan at Sheffield United. David de Gea has also not been at the same quality as in previous seasons, so selling him and pocketing the money might be smart. This money could also be used to fund summer transfers and quicken the rebuild.

Why de Gea is likely to leave Manchester United

Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson is a Manchester United loanee who is currently playing at Sheffield United. The goalkeeper has highly impressed this season, with many expecting him to be called up to the England national team for Euros. Henderson’s shot-stopping ability is rare and his acrobatic saves remind fans of de Gea in his prime. Even though the Blades’ number one has fewer appearances this season than de Gea, he has more saves, more clean-sheets, and fewer errors leading to goals. Henderson is also more apt in starting attacks, as he has more passes and accurate long balls than de Gea.

The 23-year-old has been a major player in Sheffield’s Champions League challenge and would add to any team. Henderson has expressed his goal of playing for Manchester United, so United can be sure that he will be ready to play for them in between the sticks.

Out of Form

David de Gea has not been in the greatest form as of late. He’s made countless rookie errors and doesn’t look the same player he used to be. During some games, fans have joked that it seems like there is a hole in his gloves. The Spaniard still seems to pull magical saves out of nowhere, but he also makes countless fumbles. Manchester United’s defence has been amazing this season, and this has covered up for de Gea’s mistakes, but with a more consistent keeper, United’s backline would be a fortress.

Supply Funds

David de Gea is a very expensive player. His market value is around $55 m and would supply funds for summer transfers. Selling him would open money for both wages and transfer fees. Manchester United are eyeing many deals in the summer transfer window which could be funded by de Gea’s departure. Rumours have linked Manchester United to Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Jude Bellingham, Denis Zakaria and others who could be somewhat funded for by de Gea’s departure.
