Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi, according to The Sun.

REPORT: Chelsea Plan Summer Move For Mauro Icardi

Need For Strong Options Up Front

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is desperate to strengthen his options in attack in the summer.

Neither Olivier Giroud or Michy Batshuayi have helped ease the pressure on first-choice striker Tammy Abraham, who has scored 15 goals so far this season.  Giroud’s strike against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was his first of the season in the Premier League, while Batshuayi has just two goals in 23 matches this season.

As a result, Chelsea have identified Icardi as a potential target. The 27-year-old is currently on loan at Paris Saint-Germain and has been impressive form so far this season, with 19 goals in all competitions.

The Argentinian is one of the world’s best strikers for a number of years. During his time with Inter Milan – whom he is on loan from at PSG – he scored 112 goals in 194 appearances.

Any Move May Depend On Champions League Qualification

Icardi would certainly prove an excellent acquisition for Chelsea. However, any move for the Argentinian may depend on their Champions League qualification.

Lampard’s side are currently fourth in the Premier League, having collected 44 points from 27 games. They sit four points ahead of Tottenham in sixth, who are likely to be chasing fifth spot as a result of Manchester City‘s ban from the Champions League.

As a result, Chelsea are still cautiously looking over their shoulder. Since the beginning of the year they have suffered a turn in form, winning just two of their last seven games.

Frank Lampard will be hoping their 2-1 win over Tottenham can kickstart a run of form. Chelsea face Bournemouth, Everton and Aston Villa in the Premier League, before hosting Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
