John Fleck Signs New Deal at Sheffield United

History With the Club

Fleck joined Sheffield United in 2016 from Coventry City on a free transfer. At that time, the Blades were in League One with barely a thought of Premier League football in their minds. Fleck has been a consistent first-team player ever since he first signed for the club, and this season he has proven that he can do it on the biggest of stages, alike to many others in the Sheffield United team.

Blades’ Success

So far this season, Sheffield United have provided the biggest shock. They were promoted last season, and they currently sit in sixth. Furthermore, if results go their way this weekend, they could end it in fifth place, just two points off fourth. Following Manchester City’s ban from Europe, fifth place should be enough for them to qualify for next season’s Champions League. This would be an astounding achievement, even more so because last year they were playing in the Championship. Sheffield United have never played in European competition, and qualification to the Champions League would be the achievement of a lifetime for them.

John Fleck Playing Well

Fleck is a key player for Sheffield and plays primarily as a central midfielder. He has impressed with his attacking and defensive ability this campaign. The Scot has seven direct goal involvements this season, some of which have come against historic giants such as Manchester United and Arsenal. Furthermore, he has helped defensively, with Sheffield United having the joint second most clean sheets this campaign. Fleck has managed to prove himself in arguably the best league in the world this campaign, something many of the world’s best players would, and have struggled with.
