REPORT: Premier League Interest in Oxford United Defender Rob Dickie

Rob Dickie

Oxford United defender Rob Dickie is a summer transfer target for Premier League sides Southampton and Burnley, as reports by Pete O’Rourke Football Insider suggest.

The 23-year-old has had a tremendous campaign for the U’s and has been a key player for Karl Robinson’s side.

Dickie on the Move?

It is believed that the two top-flight outfits will keep a close eye on the former Reading man before making a move in the summer. The move would certainly boost both defences ahead of next season as they look to continue their Premier League status.

Dickie, who signed a contract extension earlier this season, has made 41 appearances for the U’s this season and has impressed in the cup competitions when Oxford faced top teams such as West Ham United, Newcastle United and Manchester City.

The defender was also a transfer target for Derby County in January, but the U’s have managed to keep hold of him for now.

How Would Rob Dickie Leaving Affect Oxford?

It would be a major blow for Oxford and manager Robinson to lose such a key asset, but it would fit with their business model of signing young, talented players and selling them for a significant fee.

It would also be a major downer for the club from a promotion point of view. The U’s lost two key players in Shandon Baptiste and Tariqe Fosu on deadline day after the duo joined Brentford, and to lose Dickie in the summer would hamper their progress heading into next season.

Given his capabilities, it was always going to be a matter of time before a bigger club came in for the 23-year-old, but like with the Brentford duo, Oxford need to ensure a significant fee to tear another key player away from the League One side.
