Troy Parrott Agrees New Tottenham Hotspur Contract

The Deal

Talk over a new deal for Parrott had been going on for some time. However, they were only able to fully go ahead once Parrott turned 18 two days ago.

He has now agreed to a three-year extension with the club, effectively ending previous interest from European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Spurs were open to loaning Parrott out in the recently-closed January transfer window. Both Charlton Athletic and ADO Den Haag, managed by Alan Pardew, were keen on bringing in the Irishman.

Euro 2020 Hopes

With a new deal settled, Parrott can fully focus on breaking into the team at Spurs. The club are currently without a senior striker due to Harry Kane’s injury, but rather than play with Parrott, they have decided to use both Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura in the position instead. Manager Jose Mourinho even said he is “not at all ready.”

Parrott has already made the step up to senior international level with the Republic of Ireland, starting the 3-1 friendly win against New Zealand in November 2019. While he didn’t score, he managed to assist Sean Maguire for the opening goal.

Mick McCarthy’s side are not certain to be at Euro 2020 yet and will need to face a play-off semi-final against Slovakia before potentially meeting Northern Ireland in the play-off final.

With Parrott’s new deal finally confirmed, those games will now be fully in his sights, particularly with minutes at Spurs not forthcoming recently.

Spurs clearly see him as one for the future, but good performances in the upcoming games for Ireland could see them bring forward his inclusion in the team.
