Impressed During Breakthrough Season

Spence has impressed manager Jonathan Woodgate since breaking into the side earlier this season. He made his debut at the beginning of December 2019, during a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic. Since then, he has missed just one game in all competitions for Middlesbrough.

The 19-year-old’s impressive performances have seen him earn interest from Premier League clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur, according to Paul Fraser of The Northern Echo, said to be interested in the full-back.

What Was Said

Speaking about Spence committing to a new deal, Woodgate told the official Middlesbrough website: “We’re delighted to get Djed tied down for a longer period. He has done exceptionally well since he came into the team. He earned the right, and he knows he has to keep working hard.

“We speak a lot and he knows the standards he has set, the standards we expect, and that he has to keep listening, keep working, and keep improving. Djed is a great young talent.

“It’s important we keep our young talent. These lads have all earned their opportunities and they have taken them. They are the future of this club, and they all understand the importance of working hard and developing themselves as players.”

The 19-year-old also expressed his desire to keep getting better, saying: “I want to do well for the club, learn my craft and just keep getting better and better.

“The manager is the same, he is always on my back because he wants the best for me and the best version of me. I’m over the moon to sign the new contract, it’s a good feeling and I want to keep it going.”
