The Deal

Sheffield United announced via their website they had signed the defender. Retsos joins on loan for the remainder of the season ready to make a good impression in the Premier League.

The defender becomes the latest addition to the Sheffield United side as they look to finish in a European spot. The Blades are having a tremendous season and find themselves just a point outside the Europa League places.

Retsos is seen as one of Europe’s brightest defenders but has struggled for game time this season, making just three Bundesliga appearances. The Greek youngster is ready to test himself in the Premier League.

However, he will have to oust Sheffield United’s unmoveable back three. Chris Basham, Jack O’Connell and John Egan have been outstanding for the Blades. However, when they are missing, they do lack options. Chris Wilder has been targeting key areas this window and certainly, a new centre back was on his list.

Retsos is a talented centre back who is comfortable with his feet and a dominant figure. The defender has pace and certainly with the press Sheffield United use, Retsos will thrive. He also offers good aerial presence and is a regular target from set-pieces.

The Greek international has represented his country at all levels, including five senior caps since breaking through in 2017.

The defender could make his debut this weekend against Crystal Palace. However, should he not be signed in time, he would be available for Sheffield United against Bournemouth on the 9th of February.

A Real Coup for Sheffield United

The defender’s arrival at Sheffield United certainly raises a few eyebrows. He is a talented defender, but game time has become limited at Leverkusen.
