Bolstering The Ranks

The arrival of Mullin at the Abbey Stadium will help bolster the ranks up front for the U’s.

Cambridge have been lacking goals so far this season, with just 31 from 30 games. Sam Smith – who is on loan from Reading – is currently the top scorer so far this season with just eight goals.

However, Smith is currently out of the side due to illness, meaning caretaker manager only has three strikers to pick from in Harvey Knibbs, Andrew Dallas and Victor Adeboyejo – the latter joined on loan until the end of the season.

Paul Mullin already has a wealth of experience at League Two level, having spent the majority of his career in the fourth tier.

The 25-year-old began his career at Morecambe and scored eight goals in 44 appearances. He spent a further two seasons with the Lancashire based club, scoring 17 goals.

He then spent a season with Swindon Town, before joining his current parent club Tranmere Rovers.

Last season saw him earn the first promotion of his career, helping Rovers reach League One.

So far this season, Mullin has five goals from 25 appearances, including the winner against Premier League side Watford in their FA Cup Third Round replay.

Mullin is Cambridge’s third signing of the window, following the arrivals of Idris El Mizouni and Victor Adeboyejo from Ipswich Town and Barnsley retrospectively.

The U’s are currently without a manager following the sacking of Colin Calderwood, who won just two of his last 12 games in charge.

Cambridge host East Anglian rivals and promotion contenders Colchester United in their next game. They will then travel to Newport County next weekend.
