Fresh Start

It is a fresh start for the 32-year-old, having played almost the entirety of his career in the Football League.

Cox began his career at Reading, but only made a handful of appearances during his time at the Madejski Stadium.

He instead spent much of his time out on loan, with spells at Brentford, Northampton Town and Swindon Town.

It is Swindon where Cox eventually settled, scoring 43 times in 81 appearances before joining West Bromwich Albion.

A three-year spell followed for Cox at the Hawthorns, before making the move to Nottingham Forest, where he made 82 appearances.

However, he only lasted two years at the City Ground before returning to Reading.

Cox scored eight goals during the first season of his second spell with the Royals; however, he fell out of favour during his second season and was subsequently loaned to Bristol City.

Following his release by Reading at the end of the 2015/16 season, Cox then joined Southend United, where he had remained up until now.

Across three-and-a-half seasons with the Shrimpers, the 32-year-old registered 45 goals in 172 games at Roots Hall.

What Was Said

Upon his arrival, Cox spoke to the Western Sydney Wanderers website, saying: “I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve never been to Australia so I’m looking forward to coming over and score some goals, that’s what I’m here to do, and that’s what I’ve been doing most my career. I’m expecting a big challenge.

“I’m expecting it to be tough, you’ve got to get acclimatised which can be tough but I am looking forward to the challenge.

“As someone who’s played at the top level I’m not taking anything for granted and I’m looking forward to every challenge that comes my way in the A-League.”
