The Incident

Burnley says that a 13-year-old spectator was ejected from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during their defeat after having made an alleged racist gesture.

The teenager was accompanied by a guardian and is currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Police, who are being assisted by Lancashire Police as well as the two clubs.

The club say they will also be contacting the 13-year-old and his family with a view to putting him on an educational programme that is run in conjunction with Kick It Out and Burnley FC in the Community, which is the club’s official charity.

In a statement on the club’s website, Burnley said: “During the Premier League game [against Tottenham], a 13-year-old Burnley supporter was ejected from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following as alleged racist gesture towards Spurs player Heung-Min Son.

“Burnley Football Club would like to reiterate its zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination of any kind.

“We will continue to work with the authorities to help eradicate the growing problem of discrimination within football, and we urge all our supporters to report any such issues, in the strictest confidence, via our dedicated matchday ‘Respect’ text service, on 66777, or the Kick It Out App.”

Other Incidents

Other reported incidents of alleged racial abuse across football at the weekend include at the Manchester Derby, where a man was arrested and is currently under investigation for a racially aggravated public order.

As well, play was stopped in the League Two fixture between Forest Green Rovers and Scunthorpe United after the referee received a report of racist abuse coming from the stand.
