Rangers Close to Agreeing New Contract With Manager Steven Gerrard

Success So Far

Despite having little to show for his 18 months in charge at Ibrox, Steven Gerrard’s time at Rangers can be deemed a success so far.

The 39-year-old managed Rangers to a second-place finish in the Scottish Premiership last season, nine points behind eventual champions Celtic. It was their highest place finished since returning to the Scottish top-flight.

Furthermore, as well as their second-place finished, they also qualified for the group stages of the 2018/19 Europa League. However, they could not advance further, finishing third in their group alongside Villarreal, Rapid Wien and Spartak Moscow.

However, the former Liverpool captain has continued to improve his Rangers side. This season, they lie just two points behind Celtic – with their only defeat coming to their arch-rivals. Gerrard once more managed to negotiate the Europa League qualifying stages with his side, and they now lie top of their group with one game remaining.

Keeping Steven Gerrard is a Big Coup for Rangers

Keeping Steven Gerrard at Ibrox for another five years is a big coup for Rangers. As more managerial roles continue to become vacant, there is no doubt that his name will be linked.

As a result, it is a tying him down to a new five-year contract shows the commitment from Gerrard. It gives him the chance to continue to build a squad that overhaul Celtic as the champions of the Scottish Premiership.

What Next For Rangers?

Rangers face Celtic in the final of the Scottish League Cup, in yet another Old Firm derby. Following that, they then face BSC Young Boys in their crucial last game of the Europa League group stage. If they beat their Swiss opposition, then they are through to the knockout stages.
