Manchester City Confident Pep Guardiola Will Stay Beyond His Contract

Pep Guardiola

Rumours have circulated lately that Pep Guardiola might leave Manchester City at the end of the season, a season before his contract ends in June 2021. However, the Spaniard has refuted the claims, saying that he will at least see out his current deal, even if the Citizens fail to win the Premier League this season.

Manchester City Confident Pep Guardiola Will Honour Contract

The current Premier League champions are in third place following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on November 10. Despite City now having a mountain to climb to catch up to Liverpool, Guardiola has been quite emphatic in stating that he loves both the club and the city and intends to stay.

The same sentiment has been echoed by Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak. The club’s top hierarchy has long hoped that Guardiola would build a dynasty at City and Al-Mubarak has even said that he hopes the Spaniard will remain with the club “for years to come”. The 48-year-old City boss has a great relationship with City and has said that he enjoys the working environment. And it shows. Al-Mubarak has continually praised his skills and his ability to continuously evolve and adapt under intense pressure. Guardiola’s performance has been exemplary, leading the Citizens to an unprecedented treble last season, and beating the Merseysiders by one point in the EPL.

This season, despite a rocky start, City still have a chance to finish first, it just looks like this time they’ll be the ones doing the chasing after a strong start by Liverpool. City currently sit nine points behind Liverpool in the league and Guardiola knows that they cannot afford to lose any more matches as the winter months arrive and more fixtures pile up. Having lost three times already this season, City need to rediscover the consistency of previous years if they are to put themselves back in title contention. A Premier League team guide by Coral for the 2019/20 season documents how City and Guardiola are chasing their third successive league title. Guardiola, however, remains confident of catching Liverpool, with the utmost of confidence in his team regardless of the recent blips.

Having just signed a three-year deal this past May, the Spaniard says he remains committed to City and is another reason why many expect him to stay. Others, however, are sceptical. Fadeaway World recently reported that in part this has to do with Guardiola’s wife having returned to Barcelona to live with one of their three children. It has served to plant further doubt and raises the chances that the 48-year-old boss might leave earlier than expected. He has also been linked with a return to Bayern Munich, his former team before joining City. Regardless, Pep made it clear that he is happy where he is and would like to stay longer.

Pep told The Guardian, “I want to stay, I don’t have any reasons to move. I am incredibly satisfied to work with this club, with these players.” And if that’s not enough reason, Guardiola also added, “It’s not because I am friends Txiki [Begiristain, the sporting director] that I am going to stay for the rest of my life. I am here because I keep winning.”
