Union Berlin Shock Bundesliga Leaders for Second Time This Season

Union Berlin have beaten the Bundesliga leaders for the second time this season after Die Eisernen saw off Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Goals from Anthony Ujah and Sebastian Andersson made it a third league win in succession, and a second victory over Bundesliga leaders after they saw off Borussia Dortmund earlier in the season.

Three Successive League Wins for Die Eisernen

Following an away win over Mainz and a victory over Berlin rivals Hertha, Union had pushed themselves up the table, but with league leaders Mönchengladbach coming to town having lost just twice, it was going to be a difficult task.

Union have shown some tremendous spirit in recent weeks, and the derby victory and cup runs appears to have spurred them on to another impressive victory. As a result, they remain 11th but find themselves just four points behind Borussia Dortmund, who occupy the last remaining Europa League qualifier spot in sixth.

Impressive Turnaround

Urs Fischer’s side had won just one Bundesliga match from seven following a monumental first-ever top-flight win over then leaders, Dortmund.

Not forgetting of course that this is Union’s first-ever top-flight season, and they we certainly be pleased with their opening despite a poor start.

Avoiding relegation will be the aim for Die Eisernen but if they continue their impressive performances, they could secure a comfortable mid-table finish.

What Next for Union Berlin?

Union Berlin travel to the Veltins-Arena next Friday to face David Wagner’s FC Schalke 04, with Die Königsblauen six points ahead in fifth.

They follow that with a home game against second from bottom 1. FC Köln, before a trip to bottom club Paderborn with Urs Fischer looking to continue this impressive unbeaten run of four games.
