Leicester City have confirmed that Algerian striker Islam Slimani has joined Ligue 1 side Monaco on a season-long loan.

Tougher Than Expected at Leicester?

The 31-year-old arrived at the King Power Stadium for a club-record fee in the summer of 2016. There were high expectations on his shoulders, following Leicester’s famous Premier League-winning campaign the season before.

However, Slimani failed to adapt to the Premier League. The majority of his 13 goals with the Foxes came during his first season with the club, where he scored eight goals in 28 appearances.

In the seasons that followed he was viewed as second choice to fans favourite Jamie Vardy. During the first half of the 2017/18 Premier League he made just 12 appearances, ten of which came as a substitute. Subsequently, he was loaned to fellow Premier League side Newcastle United for the remainder of the season.

Islam Slimani also spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan. He joined Turkish side Fenerbahce on a season-long loan. However, he failed to make an impact, scoring just once in 15 appearances.

How Will Islam Slimani Fit in at Monaco?

The Algerian is likely to provide cover up front for Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim, who currently has several attacking options.

Slimani will be joining fellow Premier League flops Stevan Jovetic and Radamel Falcao at Monaco. The former endured a miserable two-year spell with Manchester City, while Falcao had disastrous loan spells with Manchester United and Chelsea. However, the Colombian did score 15 goals last season to help Monaco avoid relegation.

The Leicester loanee is not the only striker to join Monaco this summer. Wissam Ben Yedder has scored 26 goals for Sevilla in all competitions last season and has joined the French side on a five-year contract. The 29-year-old was a reported target for Manchester United this summer, following an impressive 2018/19 season.
