Breaking Down The Right-Back Situation at Lyon

As Lyon prepare for the 2019/20 season, one role in the starting eleven is up for grabs. With three players competing for the starting role, we will be taking a closer look at the right-back situation at Lyon.

Breaking Down The Right-Back Situation at Lyon

The Starter

Joining Lyon last summer, Léo Dubois looks set to be the club’s starter next season. A free agent signing, Dubois’ season started slowly. Playing just six games before the winter break, the 24-year-old had to be patient. The second half of the season saw the former Nantes player start 19 league games. Recently making his debut for the French national team, Dubois has made big strides since joining the club. A versatile option for new manager Sylvinho, Dubois played games at right midfield and left-back last season.

Contributing three goals and six assists in all competitions, Dubois is the club’s best right back. Capable at both ends of the pitch, the French international is developing into a crucial member of the team. Injuries may have slowed down his start at Lyon, but Dubois’ second season with the club should be a different story. Gaining plenty of confidence towards the end of last season and this summer, he should establish himself as the clubs number one option moving forward.

The Backup

A well-known backup from his days with Manchester United, Rafael looks set to be the clubs secondary option next season. The fan favourite was recently given a new deal, keeping him in Lyon until 2021. Completing a full 90 minutes on just eight occasions last season, the Brazilian struggled to keep his starting place, eventually losing out. A season plagued by injuries, the 28-year-old still played his role well when healthy. As Brazilian duo Sylvinho and Juninho take over, Rafael will remain with the club this summer.

A versatile option, the experienced full-back is capable of playing on both sides. This makes him a useful option for his new manager. Contributing just one assist in all competitions, Rafael is a solid backup who will be a vital member of the team’s bench. More than capable of stepping in when necessary, the former United man is sure to be valuable in certain situations.

The Odd Man Out

A club spoilt for choice at the right-back spot, Lyon will likely move on from one of their three options. As Dubois and Rafael prepare to compete for the starting role next season, Dutch defender Kenny Tete appears to be the odd man out. Portuguese outlet A BOLA recently reported that Sporting Lisbon is interested in the player. Represented by super-agent Mino Raiola, Tete is sure to end up in a good situation. Known for protecting his players financially, Riola’s influence could see the player end up in the Premier League.

Starting 12 games last season, the former Ajax player still has good potential. Only 23-years-old, the Dutchman would be a solid signing for many clubs. However, with many big decisions and clubs direction still unclear, Tete could still remain with the team. But as of right now, the talented defender is on the outside looking in. Sure to be a big summer full of change at Lyon, the starting right-back role is just one of many intriguing storylines to follow as the new season approaches.
