Jon Obika Among Five Players to be Released by Oxford United

Jon Obika

Oxford United have announced the release of five our their first team squad.

Jonte Smith, Jon Obika, Charlie Raglan, Fiacre Kelleher and Scott Shearer will all leave the Kassam Stadium this summer.

Jon Obika Among Five to Leave Oxford United

Jon Obika

The forward joined Oxford in 2017, acquired by former manager Pep Clotet after his release from rivals Swindon Town.

He managed just five goals in 35 appearances under Clotet and the arrival of Karl Robinson some months after the Spaniard’s dismissal. He made a great start in front of goal in his first full pre-season, though.

Following pre-season however, it has been a disappointing one. Obika only managed to feature for the U’s on 11 occasions, scoring just once before he suffered a serious injury in a behind closed doors friendly with Swindon.

Jonte Smith

A late January signing, Bermuda international Jonte Smith arrived at the Kassam from Lewes.

The 24-year-old had managed 56 goals in 121 appearances for the Isthmian Premier Division side, but only managed one appearance for the U’s this season.

Charlie Raglan

Right-sided defender Charlie Raglan enjoyed a loan spell with Oxford in the 2016/17 season and the U’s snapped him up on a free transfer the following year.

With different managers and loans out to Port Vale and Cheltenham Town respectively, it always looked unlikely that the 26-year-old would stay with Karl Robinson next season.

Fiacre Kelleher

The 23-year-old Irish defender signed for Oxford in 2017 but has failed to make an appearance for the club.

Kelleher has had loan spells at Solihull Moors and, more recently, Macclesfield Town, and it could be a possibility that Sol Campbell would want to keep the defender with the League Two side.

Scott Shearer

38-year-old goalkeeper Scott Shearer will retire at the end of the season after Oxford wouldn’t give him an extension.

The goalkeeper, who arrived at the Kassam in 2017 after leaving Mansfield Town, made just one appearance for the League One side.

Other Out of Contract Players

Curtis Nelson and Rob Hall have been offered new deals with the club, but the former is unlikely to sign an extension.

Young goalkeeper Jack Stevens has been offered an extra 12 months, whilst captain John Mousinho has triggered an extension due to the number of appearances he has made this season.
