Jadon Sancho is Becoming a Game Changer for Borussia Dortmund

Jadon Sancho

Three games into the new season and Borussia Dortmund remain unbeaten under new manager Lucien Favre. An underwhelming start to the season, Favre should be happy, with his side facing three tough opponents to begin the new season. A team with several big names, this Dortmund team has been pushed to the top of the table by a surprise name. Former Manchester City youth player Jadon Sancho has been a key man for Favre, despite not starting a Bundesliga game this season.

Jadon Sancho is Becoming a Game Changer for Borussia Dortmund

On Friday night, Sancho made an instant impact in the 3-1 win against Frankfurt. Subbed on shortly after half-time, his assist led to the game-changing goal. Sancho gave Favre’s team energy, something that was lacking until his appearance. As the opposition pushed for an equaliser, Sancho would once again play a key role. With stoppage time approaching, Dortmund finished off their opponents. Dribbling into the box, Sancho’s run led to Paco Alcácer’s debut goal. Sancho was the difference on the night, as his good form continues.

Borussia Dortmund’s Game Changer

Still only 18-years-old, Sancho has left his mark when given the chance. Under Favre, the teenager now has three assists in four games. Yet to start a game in the Bundesliga, the youngster has arguably been the team’s most valuable player so far this season. If he continues to produce like he has, a starting place is surely on the cards. Creating more goals than any other Dortmund player since the beginning of last season, what Sancho is doing is extraordinary.

Few 18-year-olds can produce in major leagues, which may explain why Favre hasn’t named him in the starting lineup this season. One thing Favre wants to avoid is burning out his young star, after all this rich run of form is only 16 games long. The main thing to watch with Sancho despite the obvious skill is whether or not he can maintain his form and continue to contribute on a regular basis.

England Call-Up on the Way?

Rumoured to be selected by England manager Gareth Southgate before the last international break, Sancho was left out of the squad. This was due to a number of factors. Sancho’s age goes against him here, with Southgate opting for more experienced players for obvious reasons. Another factor is a real lack of games. Rarely do you see players picked for the England team after playing just 16 games. Southgate also likes to watch his players in person before calling them up to the national team.

A versatile player, Sancho would give Southgate another good option out wide. Capable of playing on either the left or right wing, his inclusion in future squads would be a smart move. Still remarkably young, Sancho can be a difference maker down the line, with a chance to be included in England’s Euro 2020 squad a real possibility.

It’s unlikely we will see Sancho in an England shirt any time soon, but it is beginning to feel like just a matter of time. There’s no need to rush Sancho into the team, after all, he is only 18. However, anyone who’s seen him in action knows he’s the real deal, are you watching Mr Southgate?
