Wolverhampton Wanderers head into the new season on the back of an impressive and dominant Championship campaign, finishing top of the table with 99 points. They won 30 out of their 46 games. Many felt that the squad that ended last season was already capable of a good Premier League campaign but Wolves haven’t rested on their laurels and have continued to strengthen. Never before has a newly promoted team garnered so much expectation heading into England’s top division.
Player To Watch
Wolves’ rivals will be looking at Diogo Jota as the danger man for Wolverhampton this season, after impressing on loan in the last campaign. The Portugal U21 international notched 17 goals and five assists in 43 appearances. There was no hesitation from Wolves to make the deal permanent and sign him for £14 million from Atletico Madrid.
Manager – Nuno Espirito Santo
It’s going to be a much tougher test for Nuno Espirito Santo in his second season in charge of Wolves but he isn’t short of experience when it comes to playing in the top flight. He’s had spells in charge of Valencia in Spain’s top division before leading FC Porto to a second-place finish in Primeira Liga as well as guiding them to the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League. Nuno will be looking to keep playing his attacking style of football where the 5-2-3 formation was very effective in Wolves’ Championship winning season.
Predicted Finish
With many predicting a top-12 finish for Wolves the fans will be looking forward to the new season. As well as the return of Premier League football, they can look forward to seeing some fresh faces with the signings of the Portuguese shot-stopper Rui Patricio on a free from Sporting CP and the pacey Mexican striker Raul Jimenez on a season-long loan from Benfica. Wolves fans are in for an exciting season ahead of them and they will be looking to once again make the Molineux a fortress and an intimidating place to come this season.
