OFFICIAL: Pochettino Persuades Juan Foyth to Sign

Juan Foyth has spoken to local Argentinian newspaper El Dia, claiming that Pochettino has persuaded him to transfer from Estudiantes FC. The deal is for a rumoured fee of up to £10m. He will be joining Tottenham Hotspur for a contract length of five years.

Ability

Unlike new signing Davinson Sanchez, Foyth is a sleeker, more elegant player. He stands at around 6ft 3, but with a narrow frame. Clearly, he is not a bulky defender that relies solely on his strength to stop his opponents. For such a physical league, he might struggle to adapt initially. He is quite similar in his playing style to John Stones, who also is a lanky defender. Stones seems quite effective in the Premier League despite his size, and thus Foyth may also thrive.

In fact, Foyth is a quality young defender whose technical ability is brilliant. He carries the ball out from defence, with good ball control, and is able to pass it out too.

Pochettino’s Project

At just 19 years of age, the young Argentinian will join a plethora of young stars. Pochettino managed to attract his compatriot, persuading him to join the club. This already hints towards a strong working relationship that could develop between the players. The manager has already been known to care for his players, to help transform their careers. For example, Danny Rose has previously spoken about how Pochettino was a ‘father figure’ to him. Indeed, from second choice left-back, he has since rocketed to become an England international. In the same vein, Foyth may just be the next player in Pochettino’s project.

Late Business, Good Business?

Daniel Levy has once again opted to conduct his business late on, in the last week of the transfer window. The timing of his business worries some Spurs fans, and often allows other clubs to attract the higher calibre players. However, this may be something that Levy is forced into, with the wage structure that he maintains at the club. With the limited funds available, he simply cannot match the initial demands of the players, and thus must wait until the player becomes more accommodating the closer it gets to the transfer window.

So far, Davinson Sanchez and Paulo Gazzaniga have signed for the club. Foyth would take the total of players bought to three, whilst Pochettino claims he wants at least three more. All the players so far have strengthened the defensive and goalkeeping capabilities of the squad. This was necessary to some extent, but the squad still lacks another established striker and arguably needs another creative midfielder. Thus, Levy has some even later business to attend to, if his club are to be put in good stead for the season.

Verdict

Foyth will be a quality young signing, with much promise. The only concern surrounds his light frame in the physical Premier League. Also, joining from a foreign league, it will be important to see if he adapts to this standard of football. However, Pochettino’s project of developing young players has been continued, and thus this seems to be another sustainable transfer.
