Newport County appoint Graham Westley

Newport appoint Westley

Newport County have appointed the former Peterborough United man Graham Westley as manager to replace Warren Feeney. The Newport County board was united in their decision to appoint Graham, who has beaten off over 20 other applicants for the role. He will take control of Newport on Monday October 10th, with coaches Sean McCarthy and James Bittner taking charge of Newport’s game at Colchester this weekend.

Playing Career

Westley spent his career playing in the lower leagues of the English system. Starting with Queens Park Rangers, Westley represented England at U18 level. After leaving QPR, he moved to Gillingham in March 1986, where he managed just two league appearances. Soon after he entered the non-league system, starting with Conference club Barnet in 1987.

Spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Kingstonian were followed by Wealdstone, Farnborough, Harlow, Enfield, Aylesbury United, Harrow Borough, Totting & Mitcham United, Molesey and Walton & Hersham.

Management Career

After short spells with Kingstonian and Enfield as player-manager. Westley was named manager of Farnborough in 1999. He enjoyed success by winning the Isthmian League Cup in 2000–01. He then won promotion to the Conference a year later by winning the Isthmian League Premier Division.

After a three year spell with Stevenage (2003-2006) and a short spell at Rushden & Diamonds Graham returned to Stevenage in 2008 and just two seasons later took the club into the Football League by winning the Conference National Title. Westley then added another promotion just one season later when Stevenage beat Torquay United in the League Two playoff final.

Westley was appointed manager of Preston North-End in January 2012, however just over a year later he was sacked. He then returned to Stevenage for a third time near the end of the 2012-13 season.

Westley joined Peterborough United after leaving Stevenage at the end of the 2014-15 season. But his time at the club was cut short when he was sacked less than a year into the job.
