NBA News: Lakers Signing Spencer Dinwiddie

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie (26) shoots against Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis (3) during the first half at T-Mobile Arena.

Spencer Dinwiddie is planning to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to the Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Dinwiddie was traded to the Toronto Raptors from the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Dennis Schröder and Thaddeus Young. He was later waived, leading to his free agency signing with the Lakers.

Spencer Dinwiddie This Season

The former University of Colorado star has endured a difficult season, posting his worst numbers since 2021-22(the season he returned from a torn ACL).

He is averaging 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and six assists on 39.1% shooting from the floor. His decreased production with the Nets led some fans to believe that he was “mentally switched off”.

Brooklyn has struggled as of late, losing seven of their last 10 games. Dinwiddie will now get a fresh start on a better team.

Spencer Dinwiddie Lakers Signing

The Lakers had been rumored as potential suitors in a trade for Dinwiddie, but they’ve managed to get their man without parting with any of their assets.

LA had been desperately seeking for a secondary ball-handler to complement Austin Reaves off the bench, and it seems like they have finally gotten him.

The 6’5 guard was seen sitting next to Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka in their 122-139 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.

Dinwiddie-Mavericks Reunion Spoiled

The Mavericks were a strong contender to sign their former player, but ultimately fell short. Dinwiddie was even spotted at the Mavericks’ game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks on Thursday night.

Dallas’ head coach Jason Kidd had this to say when asked about the Mavericks’ trade deadline acquisitions on Friday.

“I would just like to ask everyone to have some patience. Because anytime you add two new pieces, or maybe three new pieces, it takes time to get a rhythm and to understand each other. But we’re very excited to have those two.”

Dallas was able to get Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington at the deadline, with Kidd hinting at a third addition in Dinwiddie.

Dinwiddie enjoyed a successful one-year stint in Dallas, starting all 53 games he appeared in in 2022-23.
The combo guard was a key operator for the Mavericks in the 2021-22 playoffs, as they advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2011-12.
They were ultimately defeated by the eventual champion Golden State Warriors, but Dinwiddie proved his worth to the franchise.
He averaged 14.2 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in the 2021-22 postseason. The former fan favorite will now be a Western Conference rival.

What’s Next

The Lakers are in good form right now, having won four of their last five games. They sit 9th in the West, 3.5 games back of a guaranteed playoff spot.
Their next challenge will come on Tuesday night, when they welcome the Detroit Pistons to Crypto.com Arena.
