Mets Secure Slugging First Baseman Pete Alonso with Two-Year Deal

The New York Mets have retained a key piece of their lineup, agreeing to a two-year, $54 million deal with powerhouse first baseman Pete Alonso, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Alonso, 30, stays with his original team following a prolonged, drama-filled free agency. A two-time Home Run Derby champion, Alonso has consistently demonstrated his ability to produce impressive power numbers. He headlines a strong group of free-agent first basemen that had also included Christian Walker, Paul Goldschmidt, Carlos Santana, and Josh Bell. The deal, pending a physical, includes an opt-out after this season, in which Alonso will earn $30 million.

Pete Alonso Re-Signs with Mets on Two-Year Deal

In 2023, the Mets attempted to extend Alonso. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that New York offered him a seven-year, $158 million contract extension. However, Alonso declined, which could have kept him in Queens through his age 29-35 seasons. According to Sherman, the “sides never got close to a deal.” The length of that offer matched the final seven years of Matt Olson‘s extension with the Atlanta Braves.

Instead of the long-term deal, Alonso and the Mets agreed on a one-year, $20.5 million contract to avoid salary arbitration. On April 27, Alonso reached a milestone, hitting his 200th career home run off St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray. Notably, he became the fourth-fastest player in MLB history to achieve this feat and the fourth Met to hit 200 career home runs. Alonso now ranks third on the Mets’ all-time home run list, trailing Darryl Strawberry (252) and David Wright (242).

Alonso’s impressive 2024 season included 162 games played, making him the second player in franchise history to appear in every game. He finished the season batting .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBI. In the 2024 postseason, Alonso played in 13 games for the Mets, batting .273/.431/.568 with four home runs and 10 RBI.

Over six seasons with the Mets, Alonso compiled impressive statistics, including a .249 batting average, 781 hits, 226 home runs, 586 RBI, and 493 runs scored.

Alonso won the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year Award, setting a major league record for rookies with 53 home runs.
