Max Scherzer Responds to Trade Rumors, Status of No-Trade Clause

Max Scherzer is not the biggest fan of the trade rumors swirling around the Texas Rangers ahead of the 2024 deadline.

The idea of a Max Scherzer trade has been a popular topic over the past few weeks given the Rangers’ up-and-down 2024 performance. Many people around the MLB world have given their opinions on the matter. However, what does Scherzer think about the rumors?

Max Scherzer Shuts Down Trade Rumors

Scherzer happens to have control over a possible deal given his no-trade clause. With the Rangers playing well in recent action and climbing the standings, Scherzer does not have much interest in waiving the no-trade clause.

“Yeah, I’m not gonna do that (waive the no-trade clause),” Scherzer said Wednesday on Foul Territory. “I just don’t think I’ll even have to think about that. We’re gonna play better baseball. It’s gonna be a moot point to even talk about. I think we’re gonna win here.”

Scherzer is in the final year of his contract with the Rangers. Even if Texas plans to compete for a playoff spot in 2024, trading Scherzer could still be a possibility. The 39-year-old currently has a 3.09 ERA across four games pitched. He is a future Hall of Famer who many contenders would be willing to surrender respectable prospect capital for.

The Rangers surely don’t love the idea of possibly losing Scherzer for nothing in free agency. A Max Scherzer trade will seemingly be difficult to make given his control over a potential deal. Of course, the Rangers may also have minimal or no interest in trading the veteran hurler. Texas won the World Series in 2023 and they are likely confident in their chances moving forward.

Rangers Heating Up

The Rangers endured mediocrity to begin the 2024 campaign. They have been one of the best teams in baseball over the past few weeks, though. Texas is 7-3 over their past 10 games and they are just 5 1/2 games behind the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West. The Rangers appear to be on track to compete for an AL Wild Card position at the very least.

Is a Max Scherzer trade impossible at this point? No, but it is unlikely given Scherzer’s comments and the Rangers’ recent performance.
