Mets José Quintana to Be Activated off the IL

The New York Mets starting pitching staff has been one of the main discussion topics of the team’s disappointing season so far. The unit, which includes Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Senga, one of the two newest additions to the rotation in the offseason, has stood out. His first half resulted in the first All-Star selection of his career. The other signing the Mets made in the offseason was left-hander José Quintana. Quintana was expected to step in the lower part of the rotation but was lost with a rib fracture. Missing the entire first half of the season. The Mets are expected to now have him back for the second half.

The Long Awaited Arrival of José Quintana

Per The New York Post Mike Puma, Quintana will be activated off the injured list on Friday after completing his 30-day minor league rehab stint.

His rehab stint also resulted in some ups and downs, with his latest on July 8th for Triple-A Syracuse. Throwing for 4 1/3 innings pitched and allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 5 batters.

Last year saw Quintana at his best, as he threw for a 2.98 ERA with the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, respectively. He hadn’t pitched like that since his Chicago White Sox tenure. New York signed him to a 2-year contract worth up to $26 million last offseason, expecting him to continue that trend. The lower end of the rotation is a problem, with Carlos Carrasco, David Peterson, and Tylor Megill all struggling. Megill was even sent down to Triple-A last month. The Mets hope Quintana can help fix that. Quintana’s return marks the first time the Mets’ starting rotation is whole, and they’ll have the full five starters they envisioned at the start of the year ready for the second half.
