Mets Pitcher Named an All-Star

The 2023 season is about to wrap up its first half which means the All-Star Game is coming up. The New York Mets were about to send just one player to Seattle for the midsummer classic. First baseman Pete Alonso. Alonso was sent to the National League All-Star team as a reserve after hitting 26 home runs and driving in 61 RBI. After Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo didn’t get in, it looked like Alonso would be going by himself. Until Saturday revealed that the Mets’ best starting pitcher this year will join the Polar Bear in Seattle, Kodai Senga.

Mets Pitcher Kodai Senga Named to the NL All-Star Team

As a replacement for Chicago Cubs starter Marcus Stroman, the Mets ghost forkball expert will participate with the National League All-Star team on Tuesday night. The first of his career. Senga is also the fifth Met in their history to head to the All-Star Game in their rookie years. Joining Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Dwight Gooden, and Alonso.

In his first year in the big leagues, Senga has been very impressive with more room to grow. Senga notched his first All-Star game appearance by being the Mets’ most consistent pitcher so far this year in a starting rotation that includes two future Hall of Famers in Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, and veteran Carlos Carrasco.

Senga’s Impressive First Half

With Scherzer and Verlander having early season inconstancies, and David Peterson and Tylor Megill regressing, Senga has stepped up. He’s pitched to a 7-5 record and a 3.31 ERA in 89.1 innings pitched. Currently, Senga is ninth in the National League in strikeouts with 113. That’s more than guys such as Corbin Burnes, Clayton Kershaw, Hunter Greene, and Stroman. In his most recent outing this past Wednesday, Senga dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks by striking out 12 in 8 innings. It’s a cool feather in Senga’s cap that he’ll be in the All-star Game in his first season in the Major Leagues. For the Mets, they hope it’s the first of many more times Senga will be in the All-Star game in orange and blue.
