San Diego Padres Sign Reliever Drew Pomeranz
The San Diego Padres have signed Drew Pomeranz to a four-year contract worth 34 million dollars. Pomeranz becomes the second transaction of the day for the Padres who have said they intend to be busy this offseason.
Pomeranz Career
Drew Pomeranz has had an interesting career. The 30-year-old left-handed relief pitcher is back for his second stint with the Padres. In 2016 Pomeranz was a starting pitcher during his first tour with the Padres. During that season Pomeranz had his best year as a starter going 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA. In 2017 with the Boston Red Sox Pomeranz went 17-6 with a 3.32 ERA.
In 242 career games, Pomeranz has 140 starts including 17 last season with the San Francisco Giants. But the Padres have already said Pomeranz will be paired with Kirby Yates in the back end of the bullpen. For his career, Pomeranz has a record of 46-8 with a 4.04 ERA. and a 1.360 WHIP.
The Giants traded Pomeranz to the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2019 season. Pomeranz went 0-1 with a 2.39 ERA and a .911 WHIP. He also had two saves. Pomeranz pitched two scoreless innings in the Wild Card game against the Washington Nationals.
In his 9 year career, Pomeranz has pitched for the Padres, Giants, Brewers, Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, and Oakland Athletics. Pomeranz has become the latest relief pitcher to go off the market.
Padres Outlook
The Padres seem to be loading up to make a run at the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 and beyond. Pomeranz joins a team with a core made up of players who are in their twenties. The blue-chip players are the twenty-six-year-old Manny Machado, twenty-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr., and twenty-three-year-old Chris Paddack.
The other Padres big move was to acquire outfielder Trent Grisham and starting pitcher Zach Davies. In two transactions today the Padres added two solid pitchers for their rotation and back end of the bullpen as well as an outfield who can be a big break out player in 2020.
With the way, the Padres roster currently looks there are likely more moves to come.
